5 Stages of Pregnancy You Never Knew Existed

Did you know there are more than the typical 3 trimesters of pregnancy?

Today I’m spilling the tea on everything you can expect from conception to the mysterious "4th trimester." I had no idea there was a “4th trimester” until after I’d had 2 babies! I’m so glad I know now!

I’m not only going to share with you what to expect in each, but also a lot of local resources you can use as you plan for your pregnancy, newborn and birth in Cape Girardeau.

First Trimester: The Secret Life of Pregnancy

The first trimester is like a secret club where only you and your growing baby are members. During these first 12 weeks, your body is working overtime to create a new life, and you might be feeling the effects (hello, morning sickness). It's like you're part of an exclusive group that only fellow expectant moms can truly understand.

The biggest thing that surprised me about the 1st trimester was how TIRED I was. 1st trimester tiredness is a different kind of tired than I had ever experienced. I was also super surprised at the smells and foods that triggered my nausea. Things I had loved before I was pregnant, I suddenly couldn’t STAND! Like, coffee. Which was a problem given how tired I was. I found that walking on the treadmill or outside helped with my energy levels!

My favorite local gym that I went to when I was pregnant is Fitness Plus at SFMC. There is a new women’s gym that recently opened that I am excited to try called Recreate Her Fitness Studio!

Second Trimester: The Golden Age

For many, the second trimester is the golden age of pregnancy, where you can finally start enjoying the journey. With the nausea subsiding (hopefully) and the baby bump showing, it's time to embrace the experience.

I noticed my nausea subsiding with both my pregnancies around 16 weeks (PRAISE). I only had a couple cravings, but they were really random. With my first (boy), I craved soft pretzels with cheese. I sent my husband on a wild goose chase around town to find them one evening for me! With my second (girl), I craved orange juice! I couldn’t get enough. It’s the only thing I wanted to drink, which is so funny because I had never been much of an orange juice drinker before.

I also loved the beet punch (hey, don’t knock it til you try it) from Fresh Healthy Cafe in Cape Girardeau.

Third Trimester: The Home Stretch

The third trimester is when things start to get real. As you prepare for your baby's arrival, you'll want to make sure you have everything in place for a smooth transition.

When it came to my nursery, I had both nurseries done really far in advance. I’m your typical type A, ha! I have some clients that had their nurseries done immediately, and some that wait until their baby is a few months old to complete it!

Make sure you leave space in your nursery to display your newborn photos from Photography by Rori :)

Birth: The Main Event

The moment you've been waiting for is finally here: birth! Whether you're planning a natural birth or a C-section, this stage is exciting and emotional!

My first labor experience was pretty textbook! I was very fortunate to have a really wonderful experience. My second was, well, different than the first. (Another story for another blog post)

If your interested in a local doula, look into Small Moments Doula Services.

The 4th Trimester: What No One Tells You

Surprise! Your journey doesn't end with birth. The 4th trimester is the first three months of your baby's life, where both of you are adjusting to the world outside the womb.

Post Partum Depression hit me like an unexpected ton of bricks! I didn’t even realize that’s what was happening until I was out of it, but PHEW that was ROUGH. It’s really important to have a support system in place, and a therapist to help you through the PPD + PPA journey. My favorite PPD therapist is Erin at Sunrise Therapy Services.

Of course, every journey is unique, and it's okay to feel a whole range of emotions along the way. As long as you've got your support system and resources, you'll be able to navigate this crazy adventure.

You got this!

Klyde’s newborn session was so special for me as a photographer. I had the pleasure of capturing mom and dad before they ever had kids, when they were pregnant both times, and also big brother’s first year of life! I am always overjoyed to watch these little people grow, and capture them through each milestone. Klyde slept through his entire session and made my job so easy! Just look at that sweet face! He started to wake up toward the end of the session, so I made sure to get some sweet shots of him awake. His images are going to look stunning on mom and dad’s walls next to big brother’s newborn images.

There are not enough wonderful things I can say about Mister Jude and his sweet parents! Jude’s newborn session was perfect, and he slept through the whole thing! I just love his little toes peeking out in the photo above. I can’t wait to see the photos from their session hanging on their wall. Mom looked so gorgeous and you can tell just how proud she and dad are of their precious boy. I love how timeless their images are. I know they will treasure them for years and years to come.

Visiting parents and their new baby at home

Someone you love has just brought a brand new little life into the world, and you can’t wait to go over to their house, and get in some new baby snuggles!! There are a few things to keep in mind before your visit. (These are just my opinions, guys.. Take them as you will. Every mom will have her own wishes based on her comfort level)

Number 1- Don’t show up unannounced! Just don’t. Contact the parents and ask for a good time to swing by… Surprise visits are never fun for a parent with a newborn, and there’s a very good chance that someone in the house is not fully clothed (:

Number 2- Respect the parents’ wishes. Do they even want visitors? You should ask this. A lot of moms feel an intense amount of pressure to entertain even when they’re getting used to an entire world of all things new. They could be overwhelmed (actually, they probably are).

Number 2.5- What are the parents’ rules?? Do they want you to take your shoes off at the door? Do they want you to wash your hands?? (actually, do this regardless). Do they want you to wear a mask? Do they want you to be vaccinated? Do they want you to stand outside the window and wave? They are the parents and have thought long and hard about what “rules” they want set in place for their new baby. R-E-S-P-E-C-T….yep I just sang that, I know you did too!

Numero 3- Don’t expect to be fed while you’re there. You should be feeding them, whether it be a hot meal, a freezer meal, donuts, a coffee, a tea, hot chocolate, whatever they like to eat or drink. They will be so grateful!

Number 4- If there is an older sibling, take the time to spend a few minutes with them, either playing, reading a book, coloring, etc. New babies can throw a wrench in a toddler’s world, so make sure said toddler is feeling included while you’re there.

Number 5- Ask if you can help with housework! They may love it if you loaded their dishwasher, or folded some laundry, or even just hold the baby while they take a shower for the first time in they can’t remember when. Ask if they need a nap! Ensure that mom and dad don’t need to entertain you, and that you’d be happy to look after the baby while they catch up on some Z’s!

Bringing a human into the world is a tough job, physically, mentally, and emotionally, whether it’s the first baby or the seventh. We are all just trying to figure it out. Have a little love, a lotta grace, and just marvel at the incredibleness that is parenthood and newbornhood. :)

Georgia

Miss Georgia was the sweetest little peach for her newborn session! We tailored this session to match the colors in their home, so their images will look seamless hanging on their walls. Georgia’s mom and dad were 2 of the nicest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. I love when my clients end up leaving as new friends!

Journi

Miss Journi was pretty in pink at her newborn session! Would you believe she was over 10 pounds at birth?? I could just squeeze her cheeks all day!! She was so sleepy and content her whole session. I had the honor of capturing a milestone session for her big sister when she was 6 months old, as well as a cake smash session when she was one. It’s always such an honor to be apart of these precious days that are so important to you. I love knowing that my clients treasure their images as much as I treasure capturing them.

The Vines Family

My session with the Vines Family was absolutely perfect. The weather was beautiful, the sunset was amazing, and their family was so much fun! We had that dreamy golden light just minutes before sunset. The family owns a bajillion acres (slight exaggeration) in Northeastern Cape County, and I just knew that we would have the perfect scenery out there! Whitney’s gorgeous dress came straight from my client closet, as well as all the accessories you see in their images. I take care of every little detail! I can’t wait to see these images hanging in their home for them to cherish for years to come!

Haisley

Miss Haisley was just a bundle of sweetness! Her newborn session could not have been more precious. We did simple, neutral setups, with little hints of rich, fall colors. I think we are all manifesting fall to bring some cooler temps.

Look at all her hair!! I love when newborns have a lot of hair, it is just so so sweet, and it is always SO soft! It is evident in the family images, just how much her parents adore her. I love getting to capture how much love there is between new parents and their brand new little one. I know Haisley’s mom and dad will treasure these images for years to come.
